The sound installation is called Echo. The audio from the speaker is synthesized sound lasts for about three hours.
The work explores the concept of time, time is just an illusion that constructed by human brain. There is no past, present, and future.
I first recorded the sound and silence from morning till night on one day in new york city (which include the sound of wind, footsteps, snow, train, sea wave, baby cries, conversations, street, etc.), then using granular synthesis method, these field recordings are synthesized into the sound pattern which is transformed by electromagnetic waves of cosmos from ALMA Observatory, which is an astronomical interferometer of 66 radio telescopes in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile observing electromagnetic radiation at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The sound pattern maintains the relative frequencies and intensities of the spectrum from the Universe.
The fluctuation of the blue wave light on the wall corresponds to the frequency of sound as a visual metaphor of vibrating to the liminal space between the momentary and the eternal.
This sound installation is about collapsing linear space-time, entering into a timeless space — a hyperspace, a space of atemporal, and also about the relationship of the momentary and the eternal.
